A quick glossary
Three words come up constantly and most homeowners have never needed them before. Fascia: the vertical face. Soffit: the panel below. Eave: the whole projecting edge.Knowing the words will not be on a test, but it makes the quote readable. When somebody says the channel mounts under the soffit, you know exactly what they mean.
Why the track mounts at that line
The mounting line was not chosen for looks alone, it is where the constraints line up. The eave runs the full width of the house, which gives the light something to trace. Height gives you coverage, and the roof above it takes the direct weather.
The direction the light points
The channel can go beneath the overhang or on the vertical face, and the choice changes what the light does. Tucked underneath, the output points down. On the face, the effect is a bright edge. Which one is right depends on the house and on what you want it to do.Where the channel sits decides the reach down the wall, and that turns out to matter more than the brand of the hardware.
Deep overhangs, and houses that barely have any
Overhang depth is not standard, and it affects what is possible. Deeper is good for protection, and sometimes worse for coverage. With little overhang, the choices narrow. None of it is knowable from the street view online.
What the eave line does the rest of the year
Set to warm white, it stops being a holiday product. The practical version is finding your keys at the

It also means the house has a shape at night rather than a dark patch.
Gutters, and what happens when the roof gets replaced
The eave line is shared real estate. If a roof or a gutter replacement is coming in the next year or two, say so during the consultation. Doing it out of order costs a second visit. It is worth mentioning even if the roof work is only a maybe.
What happens above the first floor
A single story house has one line to consider. A two story has more than one option. The top edge is the one that defines the house. The lower run is the functional one. Running both is often the answer, and it can be phased.
