First, the words
The roof edge has parts with names, and knowing them helps you read a quote. The fascia is the vertical board along the roof edge, the one the gutter hangs on. The soffit is the underside, the panel you see when you stand under the overhang and look up. Eave is the general term for the projecting section.Knowing the words will not be on a test, though it helps when a quote uses them. When somebody says the channel mounts under the soffit, you now know what part of the house they are pointing at.
Why the track mounts at that line
Permanent lighting runs along the roof edge and the eaves for reasons that are mostly practical. The eave runs the full width of the
https://evercrestlighting.com/contact/ house, which gives the light something to trace. Height gives you reach down the facade, and the roof above it takes the direct weather.
The direction the light points
The channel can mount up under the soffit or out on the fascia, and that decision changes the effect. Mounted under the soffit, it throws down the face of the house, which lights the building itself. Mounted on the fascia, it reads more as an outline against the sky. Which one is right depends on the house and on what you want it to do.The eave line also determines how far down the wall the light reaches, which is why the same house can look very different depending on where the channel ended up.
When the eave complicates things
Not every roof has a generous overhang. Deeper is good for protection, and can work against the wash you wanted. A shallow one leaves less to hide behind and changes where the channel has to sit. None of it is knowable from the street view online.
What the eave line is worth on an ordinary night
Set to warm white, it stops being a holiday product. It puts a soft wash on the approach to the house, so people can see where they are going. A house with a lit edge looks like somebody lives there.
A practical scheduling note
The eave line is crowded. If a roof or a gutter replacement is anywhere on your horizon, mention it early. Doing it backwards means paying twice for the same work. It is a five second question that saves a real headache.
Two story houses have two eave lines
A single story house presents one eave. Add a floor and there is a question to answer. The top edge is the one that defines the house. A lower eave over a porch or a garage adds a second line closer to eye level, which is more useful and less dramatic. Running both is often the answer, though it does not have to happen in the same year.
