The word is free
Custom appears on almost every outdoor lighting quote in existence. The word no longer distinguishes anybody. What is worth checking is what the company hands you, since one of those produces paper and the other produces a number.Keep that straight while you are comparing companies. A package starts with a number and works backward. A design starts from the property. Both can be perfectly honest pieces of business. Only one of them is designed for you, and you deserve to know which you have.
What a design contains
A plan describes your house. Scope should be written down feature by feature, because the front of the house means two different things to two people. It says what the standard white is. It says where the controller mounts and how the wiring runs. And it accounts for the unlit areas, deliberately.
Why the design precedes the number
A price with nothing behind it is not comparable to anything. The cheaper number is often the one covering less, which only becomes clear at night after the install. When the design comes first, the comparison is honest. When the price comes first, scope gets trimmed to hit it.A plan you understand gives you something to check the finished job against, which is worth more than any assurance given in a driveway.
Designing for the way you use the property
A good design conversation is mostly questions. How you use the outside of your home, which parts you occupy at night, and whether the priority is holidays, everyday light, or both. Those answers shape the design as much as the building.
Design lets one plan cover several jobs
Roofline, landscape, accent, patio and security work usually all appear on the list. Bought separately over several years, they never quite agree: inconsistent color, uneven brightness, no hierarchy. Designed together, they support each other even when the budget spreads the work across phases.
You are allowed to say no to part of it
A design is a proposal, not a verdict. If a run does not appeal to you, say so. A company unwilling to revise is not really designing for you. Ask how many rounds are normal before you sign anything.
What you walk away with
A design is worth having in writing. It is useful down the road in ways that are not obvious at the time. The design is yours.
